E’ stato un mese breve, intenso, ma soprattutto pieno di musica live. Sono tre gli artisti che sono approdati qui nei Paesi Bassi e si tratta di tre artisti che hanno scritto le pagine migliori della musica rock inglese degli ultimi vent’anni. Non potevo assolutamente perdermeli!
1 Febbraio, AFAS Live (Amsterdam): Stereophonics, Kind Tour 2020
Il mio tour de force è cominciato il primo del mese con gli Stereophonics e la tappa del Kind Tour 2020 di Amsterdam. Kind è anche il nome del loro ultimo album in studio, uscito il 25 ottobre 2019 e anticipato in estate dai singoli Fly like an Eagle e Bust this town. Il concerto è stato aperto da Nadia Sheikh, voce pop e chitarre cattive, che non conoscevo ma che ho apprezzato (qui potete ascoltarla in Flip the Coin). Nonostante il tour si chiami Kind come l’ultimo disco della band, lo show non è per niente costruito intorno a questo disco. Anzi, gli Stereophonics non suonano che due pezzi da Kind che comunque, detto tra noi, è un progetto che poco regge il confronto con quelli precedenti (mi riferisco soprattutto Just Enough Education to Perform e Scream Above the Sounds, secondo me i migliori). In un AFAS strapieno e dall’acustica discutibile, il che causa problemi soprattutto nella prima parte del concerto, ripercorriamo la carriera della band del Galles cominciata ormai quasi trent’anni fa, attraverso hit come Maybe Tomorrow, Have a Nice Day, Mr. Writer e ovviamente Dakota. Tutti bravissimi, ma il frontman Kelly Jones è una spanna sopra tutto e tutti – perfetto, forse troppo. Il tour degli Stereophonics continua nei prossimi mesi in UK, Irlanda e Paesi Bassi. 7 Febbraio, Ziggo Dome (Amsterdam): Liam Gallagher, European Tour 2019/2020
Dopo l’uscita dell’ultimo album in studio Why me? Why not nel settembre del 2019, Liam comincia la promozione del disco con una tournée in Irlanda e Regno Unito, per poi approdare dall’altro lato della Manica. Sono stata alla tappa di Dublino a novembre 2019 e ho voluto replicare con Amsterdam, ma fino all’ultimo minuto nessuno sapeva se il concerto si sarebbe tenuto. Solo 48 ore prima, infatti, Liam aveva abbandonato il palco ad Amburgo perché aveva completamente perso la voce. Dopo la band supporto, i fedelissimi Twisted Wheel (qui potete ascoltare la loro Strife), Liam sale sul palco e apre con Rock’n’Roll Star. La voce va e viene – in 48 ore non possono succedere miracoli – ma non sembra essere un problema. E’ il pubblico ad aiutarlo a cantare e nonostante i problemi Liam riesce a regalarci una bellissima versione di Stand by Me, inserita in scaletta contro ogni pronostico. La scaletta è un compromesso tra molti brani degli Oasis e brani tratti dall’ultimo album (che nel Regno Unito ha debuttato al numero 1) come i singoli Shockwave, The River e la meravigliosa Once. Il tour di Liam Gallagher continua in tutta Europa, qui tutte le date in aggiornamento.
17 Febbraio, Tivoli Vredenburg (Utrecht): Kaiser Chiefs, Duck Tour 2020
La band indie rock di Leeds approda al Tivoli Vredenburg di Utrecht il giorno dopo aver registrato il tutto esaurito ad Amsterdam, per una tappa del tour che porta il nome del loro ultimo disco uscito la scorsa estate, Duck. Aprono i Port Noir, svedesi e incazzati, un mix di rock, hip-hop e r&b (not my cup of tea, ma se li volete ascoltare, questa è Flawless). La scenografia è pazzesca: in fondo a destra c’è il capanno che compare anche sulla copertina di Duck, la batteria e le tastiere sono caricate in cima a due gigantesche ruote di trattore, gli amplificatori risplendono e la scritta ‘Kaiser Chiefs’ campeggia in alto a sinistra, fatta di lampadine. Ricky Wilson sale sul palco vestito di bianco (cercherò di non parlare del suo fascino perchè potrei andare avanti per ore) e apre il concerto con People know how to love one another, la prima traccia di Duck. Non ci mettiamo molto a capire che il virus di Gallagher ha colpito anche Ricky perché la sua voce, come quella di Liam, va e viene. E’ lui stesso alla fine della prima canzone ad ammetterlo e aggiunge ‘Mi dispiace, stasera niente Kaiser Chiefs’. Fa per andarsene, poi cambia idea e torna davanti l’asta del microfono. ‘Il concerto ci sarà, ma dovete aiutarmi a cantare’. Vado contro la critica olandese, che li ha praticamente distrutti, e vi dico che sebbene tecnicamente non sia stato il loro migliore live, alla fine il carisma di Ricky (che riempiva le pause tra le canzoni con l’aerosol portatile), la bravura degli altri membri della band e i brani di Duck (un album davvero niente male) hanno compensato la voce assente del frontman. Entusiasmanti durante la performance della loro hit Ruby, perfetti in Record Collection – il singolo che ha anticipato l’uscita dell’album. Andrò sicuramente a rivederli, magari non nella stagione dell’influenza. Il tour riprende in tutta Europa da aprile, qui le date.

February’s gigs: Stereophonics, Liam Gallagher, Kaiser Chiefs
This month was short, intense and full of live music. Three great artists have showed up here in The Netherlands, three artists who have written some of the best pages of British rock music during the last twenty years. Could I miss them?
February 1st, AFAS Live (Amsterdam): Stereophonics, Kind Tour 2020
My tour de force started the first day of the month with Stereophonics and their gig in Amsterdam as part of the Kind Tour 2020. Kind is also the name of their last studio album, released on October 25th 2019 and anticipated in the summer by the singles Fly like an Eagle and Bust this town. The show started with a performance by Nadia Sheikh, who brought her pop voice and aggressive guitars. I had never heard of her but I quite appreciated her music (here you can listen to Flip the Coin). Even though the tour has been named after Stereophonics’ last album, the show has not been constructed around this record. The band only played a couple of songs from Kind – an album that, to be honest, cannot be compared to the previous ones. I am talking about albums like Just enough Education to Perform and Scream Above the Sounds, which are the best ones in my opinion. The venue was full and there were some technical issues which caused some problems particularly during the first part of the show. We relived the long career of the Welsh band, that started thirty years ago, through hits as Maybe Tomorrow, Have a Nice Day, Mr. Writer and of course Dakota. The band did great, but the frontman Kelly Jones is a cut above everything and everyone – he’s perfect, maybe too perfect. February 7th, Ziggo Dome (Amsterdam): Liam Gallagher, European Tour 2019/2020
After the release of the last studio album Why me? Why not in September 2019, Liam Gallagher started promoting the record with a tour in Ireland and the UK and later moved to the other side of the English Channel. I have been to one of the Dublin gigs in November 2019 and I had a great time, so I decided to go also for the Amsterdam gig but until the very last moment no one knew if the gig was going to be on. Only 48 hours earlier, in fact, Liam had left the stage in Hamburg because his voice was completely gone. After the support band, the loyal Twisted Wheel (here you can listen to their Strife), Liam gets on stage and sings Rock’n’Roll Star. His voice comes and goes – miracles can’t happen in 48 hours – but it does not seem to be a problem. It’s the audience that helps him sing and despite the issue Liam delivers a marvelous version of Stand by Me, part of tonight’s setlist against all predictions. The setlist is a compromise between lots of songs by Oasis and songs from his last album (which debuted n.1 in the UK) such as the singles Shockwave, The River and the lovely Once. February 17th, Tivoli Vredenburg (Utrecht): Kaiser Chiefs, Duck Tour 2020
The indie rock band from Leeds went to Tivoli Vredenburg in Utrecht the day after a sold out gig in Amsterdam, part of the tour which is named after the album they released last summer, Duck. The support band is called Port Noir, they’re swedish and seem pretty pissed off, with their mix of rock, hip-hop and r&b (not my cup of tea, but if you want to listen to them, here’s Flawless). The scenic design is awesome: on the back of the stage, on the right side, there is the same hut you can see on the cover of Duck, the drums and the keyboards have been put on a couple of giant tractor wheels, the amplifiers are all shiny and there’s ‘Kaiser Chiefs’ written with led lamps above, on the left side. Ricky Wilson jumps on stage dressed in white (I will try not to talk about how charming he is as I could go on for hours) and sings People know how to love one another, the first track from Duck. It doesn’t take long for us to realize that he must have caught the same virus Liam Gallagher caught, since his voice, just like Liam’s, comes and goes. It’s Ricky himself who admits it at the end of the first song as he announces: ‘I’m sorry, tonight no Kaiser Chiefs’. He heads to the back of the stage, then changes his mind and comes back to the microphone. ‘The gig is on, but you have to help me sing’. I will go against the Dutch critics, that completely destroyed Kaiser Chiefs, and I’ll tell you that even though this hasn’t been their best gig, there’s a couple of things that compensated for the voice problems: Ricky’s charisma (who spent the breaks between songs with his portable nebulizer), the talent of the other members of the band and the songs from Duck (a record which is absolutely not bad). They were amazing during the performance of their hit Ruby and they were absolutely perfect in Record Collection – the single that anticipated the release of Duck. I will definitely see them again in the future, maybe not in the flu season. Kaiser Chiefs will start touring again in Europe in april, here’s the dates.
